Cucumber-tree, Cucumber Magnolia (Magnolia acuminata) - Tree becoming 30 m. tall; leaf-blades elliptic to ovate, or rarely obovate, 1.5—3 dm. long, more or less acuminate, usually membranous; sepals mostly lanceolate or elliptic; petals cuneate to oblanceolate, 5—7 cm. long, greenish or yellowish-green (or yellowish in var. subcordata); fruit-cone 5—8 cm. long, usually with many follicles.

Habitat:

Mesic to subxeric forests, especially (but by no means strictly) over mafic or calcareous rocks, up to at least 1550m (where growing with Betula alleghaniensis, Abies fraseri, Picea rubens, and Sorbus americana), ultramafic outcrop barrens (where codominant with Pinus rigida and Quercus alba).
